Free Motion Embroidery Coral Works

Some of you may remember these particular textile coral art pieces that I created a few years ago. I have been wondering how to elevate them and combine the free motion embroidered pieces with my current coral textile textile sculptures.

This was my the result of my first round of experiments - this idea came right after my solo exhibition. I still wanted to use white because I wanted to convey the theme of fragility and the dire situation the coral pieces are in.

Seascape textile art piece without the shadow box.

I had this framed in a wooden shadow box. However, I wasn’t really happy with the way the solid sides of the box made the coral pieces feel constrained. I wanted the pieces to feel free as if they are in the ocean!

Adding Colour

My next piece had a pop of colour and combined not only the soft sculptures but also a variety of Broderie Anglaise pieces. It took me a few tries to figure out how I wanted the piece to look like. I’m glad that I had the sketches from last year to draw inspiration from - this is definitely a reason to keep your sketchbooks!

I layered the free motion embroidered organza and soft sculpture pieces to create layering and depth.

Framing in Plexiglass

I found a nice framer, Talent Arts Frame Makers, in Tanjong Pagar Plaza in Singapore, and they created a nice plexiglass box frame. I love how it’s protected and yet still feels free!

Between the Waves (20 x 20cm), plexiglass framing

Here’s the final work, Between the Waves, that I showcased at the Creators & Dreamers exhibition last weekend (1 -3 Dec) in Singapore. This piece is also for purchase on my shop.

I have used free motion embroidery on remnant organza, incorporating Broderie Anglaise into the piece. Each piece of coral is individually handcrafted and stitched before layering them onto the canvas to create depth. The tactile nature of the piece, with its carefully stitched patterns and remnant fabric choices, creates an intimate connection, inviting you to reach out and explore the wonders between the waves.

Medium - remnant textile, fiber on canvas

20 x 20 x 7cm

Comes framed in a plexiglass shadow box
