Exploring My Moss Textures Again

I recently took on a part-time role at a school, teaching sustainability once a week. I initially thought of declining, but a friend said it would be a good way to structure my time in the studio. It does sound very strange, right? Time in the studio means more time in the studio. Yes, she said, it will give you the chance to focus as the teaching would be considered a break in between your art time. We were discussing this as I had recently said I was getting paralysis analysis—overthinking leading to inaction. I’m now in week 2 of my part-time job, and so far it feels comfortable. I am planning my day better - I don’t know why this is so, and I actually thought it would be the opposite!

We shall see what happens!

Anyway, I have been meaning to make more moss-themed works.

I started a few of these using a modified turkey stitch with the help of tracing paper, my trusty sewing machine and some handstitching.

I was stitching on a felt base, and it’s very difficult to draw or even make a mark on felt. I ended up using tracing paper to outline my basic shapes before using it to “trace” the shapes on the felt with the sewing machine. Once this was done, I carefully removed the tracing paper to reveal the shapes below. These then formed the base for my moss pieces. I’m using corn blue as this is part of a collaboration with another artist. I can’t wait to show you the result.

Stay tuned!
