Starting New Coral Textile Soft Sculpture
I’m slowing getting back into the groove of things after such a long break. It’s good to take creative breaks, but then there’s always the issue of falling into the trap of thinking, “just a while longer!”. This reminds me of binging on Netflix when my husband almost always says, “just one more episode!”.
I have been planning to have a textile art solo exhibition since last year. The idea cropped up around June, and now it’s time to experiment and execute! After reviewing the past few years of work, I decided to continue exploring the theme of corals and fragility. I enjoy working with organza, and love using free motion embroidery to translate their textures, shapes and colours into soft textile sculptures. Something that I haven’t been able to bring out is the interactivity of the pieces with the audience - how will the audience be able to experience the the beauty of the corals and yet also understand how we impact them. An idea that was broached in discussions with my friends was the use of electronics in the art piece. However, there are some challenges that I have to overcome:
One of the key hurdles (or two) is:
finding a suitable venue that is within my budget; and
finding a suitable technical collaborator who would understand what I want for the exhibition.
The more technical hurdles include:
figuring out the size of the works;
time for experimentation and finalizing the works that need to be made; and
sourcing for materials particularly when I work with found objects and textile remnants
Phew! That’s a lot of things to cover, but I started the experimentation in the fourth quarter of last year and have decided to not only continue the free motion embroidery techniques I used on the last series of work, Thrive, but to include more depth to the stitching by using broderie anglaise.
Let’s see where this takes me!
