Making the Invisible Visible

Weeds Textile Art

I spent the first quarter of 2019 looking at the invisible.

I looked down all the time, but not at my gadget but at the weeds on the ground.

Weeds are a grossly misrepresented plant, and I wanted to show how beautiful they are in a series of fabric collages. Unfortunately, we have been taught to get rid of them because they "invade" our manicured gardens and landscaped areas. But did you know that weeds are restoring plants, they bring the trimmed lawns back to their natural state - they are, in fact, restorative beings.  Apparently, weeds lets us know how healthy the soil is - so if you encounter a lot of weeds, instead of reaching out for the weedkiller (actually you shouldn't), it's important to observe and "listen".

Weeds help bring in diversity (while monocrops don't) including a variety of insects and pollinators (think bees and butterflies!), so it was very exciting for me to see wild flowers blossom along road dividers and even in my friend’s garden when I paid a visit to the UK.

I don't have a green thumb, but I do know that diversity is key to a better planet.

About Kausmo

Derived from the word “cosmos” - system of thought, Kausmo is a restaurant that seeks to challenge food norms through personalised dining experiences, thoughtful product sourcing and open conversations. Fresh ingredients are thoughtfully sourced to create a sumptuous set 6 course carte-blanche dinner menu. These fruits & vegetables may be overstocked, oddly-shaped & sized, or too ripe for retail, but they can be perfect on our plates. Native edibles are also celebrated in the dishes for their intriguing flavours, creating conversation and appreciation for the flora and fauna that thrive in our climate.
